Update

Alaska Loses 140,000 Passengers
This is the year that will bring the full effect of the cruise lines’ reaction to Alaska’s head tax and other measures voted in as law two years ago by ballot. As a result, the state will see a 14.2 percent drop in cruise capacity — 140,000 fewer cruise passengers. And the reductions aren’t over yet.

We are an Alaska-based, not-for-profit organization, established to build strong partnerships between local businesses, communities and cruise companies. Led by life-long Alaskan John Binkley, our goal is to work with businesses and public leaders to improve community relationships, increase economic benefits for Alaskans and address environmental concerns. Alaska cruise leaders hail tax cut, marketing hike

Key industry figures hailed the 25 percent head tax cut and a nearly 80 percent boost for the state’s tourism marketing budget as significant steps in getting Alaska’s cruise business back into growth mode.

Used cooking oil gets new use as biofuel

Heather Hardcastle likes to think green. So does Royal Caribbean Cruises.

So when Heather approached the company about recycling its used cooking oil, the response was positive. Together the Juneau fisherwoman and the cruise line worked out a protocol with the Coast Guard that resulted in the collection of about 6,000 gallons of used cooking oil last season.
